Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your Class 1 licence, CPC, and Digi-Tacho card status prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Licences & Certifications' section — the advert lists all three as hard requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 5 multi-drop routes daily across East Anglia, averaging 350 miles per shift with zero late deliveries over 12 months'.

3

🎯 Highlight your flexibility and availability management, as the advert specifically calls out the ability to set your own weekly availability — mention any experience working flexible or ad-hoc shift patterns.

4

🌐 Reference both local drops and long-distance haulage experience separately on your CV, as the advert lists both as part of the role scope (3–7 drops a day, hub runs, long distance).

5

🤝 Include a brief note on customer interaction skills — the advert explicitly requires 'a good level of English communication with customers and client', so mention any customer-facing delivery or client liaison experience.

Dear Hiring Manager,

Swift Recruit's Class 1 Driver vacancy near Thetford is a strong match for my current licence portfolio and operational experience. I hold a valid Class 1 HGV licence, in-date Driver CPC, and digital tachograph card, and have over two years of hands-on experience across multi-drop local deliveries and long-distance hub runs — precisely the work pattern your client requires.

My background in HGV driving includes managing 5–7 drops per shift across varied routes, completing thorough pre-departure vehicle checks, and maintaining full tachograph compliance throughout. I am comfortable working independently from early-morning starts and have consistently met delivery deadlines while maintaining a professional, customer-focused manner at every drop point.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a tight delivery deadline under difficult conditions — what did you do?

Situation: During a winter shift in January, I was running a 6-drop route across Norfolk when I encountered a road closure on the A11 that added 40 minutes to my planned route. Task: I needed to complete all 6 drops within the agreed delivery windows to avoid customer complaints and a potential service penalty for the haulage firm. Action: I immediately contacted my transport manager, rerouted using my in-cab satnav, and called ahead to the final two customers to advise of a revised ETA. I also adjusted my break timing to stay within tachograph compliance. Result: I completed all 6 drops within 25 minutes of the original windows, received positive feedback from two customers for the proactive communication, and avoided any service failure report.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult or frustrated customer during a delivery.

Situation: On a multi-drop run, I arrived at a business premises 20 minutes later than the stated window due to a previous drop overrunning. The goods manager was visibly frustrated and initially refused to sign for the delivery. Task: I needed to complete the handover, maintain a professional manner, and preserve the working relationship between the haulage company and the client. Action: I calmly acknowledged the delay, explained the reason without making excuses, and offered to note the issue on the delivery paperwork so the client could raise it formally if needed. I also ensured the unloading was completed efficiently to minimise further disruption. Result: The manager accepted the delivery, signed the paperwork, and the account remained active. My transport manager later noted the client had not raised a formal complaint.
