Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your Class 1 licence and Driver CPC card details prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Licences & Qualifications' section, as these are the two hard requirements stated in the advert.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 12-15 multi-drop deliveries per shift across 6 postcodes, maintaining 98% on-time delivery rate'.

3

🌐 Highlight any experience with temperature-controlled or chilled/frozen food logistics, as the advert specifically flags this as preferred for Booker's retail partner routes.

4

🎯 Mention handball and manual handling experience explicitly — the advert flags this as a key physical requirement, so showing familiarity reduces perceived risk for the hiring manager.

5

🤝 Reference your flexibility with shift patterns and short-notice scheduling changes, as the advert states routes vary daily and hours can change at short notice.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's Class 1 Driver role at the Belvedere Retail Partner site is a strong match for my background in multi-drop HGV distribution. I hold a current Class 1 licence and a valid Driver CPC, and I have hands-on experience completing high-volume multi-drop runs — including handball deliveries to retail outlets — while maintaining full compliance with tachograph and drivers' hours regulations.

My background in food and wholesale logistics has given me practical experience with temperature-controlled loads and the physical demands of handball delivery points. I am accustomed to routes that vary daily and to adapting my schedule at short notice, which I understand is a key requirement for this position at Booker.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a last-minute change in your route or schedule.

Situation: Midway through a 14-drop shift for a food wholesaler, the depot called to say two additional drops had been added and one address had changed due to a store closure. Task: I needed to re-sequence my remaining 8 drops to absorb the extra stops without breaching my drivers' hours limit. Action: I pulled over safely, used my route planning app to recalculate the most efficient order, informed the depot of my revised ETA for the final drop, and flagged one stop that would require a short wait due to a restricted delivery window. Result: I completed all 16 drops on time, finished within my legal hours, and received positive feedback from the depot manager for proactive communication.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult customer or retailer at a delivery point — how did you handle it?

Situation: A convenience store owner refused to sign for a chilled delivery, claiming three cases were damaged, though I had not observed any damage during loading. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute professionally without delaying the remaining 9 drops on my route. Action: I calmly asked the retailer to show me the specific cases, photographed the items, completed a discrepancy note, and contacted the depot to log the claim in real time. I offered to leave the undisputed stock and arrange a returns collection for the queried cases. Result: The retailer accepted the delivery, the claim was processed within 24 hours, and I maintained my on-time completion rate for the rest of the shift.
