Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ List your Class 1 licence and Driver CPC prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Licences & Certifications' section — the advert lists both as hard requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your multi-drop experience: e.g. 'Completed 18-25 drops per shift across Oxfordshire and Berkshire, maintaining 98% on-time delivery rate'.

3

🌐 Highlight any experience with temperature-controlled or chilled/frozen food deliveries, as the advert specifically flags this as preferred for the Booker wholesale environment.

4

🎯 Emphasise physical resilience and handball experience in your personal statement — the advert explicitly warns of demanding manual work and outdoor conditions, so showing you are prepared differentiates you.

5

🤝 Mention experience serving independent retailers, convenience stores or wholesale customers, as Booker's core client base is independent retailers and caterers.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a significant change in your delivery route or schedule at short notice.

Situation: Midway through a 22-drop shift delivering ambient grocery stock, I received a call from the depot informing me that a road closure on the A34 had blocked access to six of my remaining stops. Task: I needed to resequence the remaining drops without missing any customer windows. Action: I pulled over safely, used my in-cab navigation to identify an alternative sequence, contacted three time-sensitive customers to advise of a revised ETA, and notified the transport office of my updated plan. Result: I completed all 22 drops within 35 minutes of the original finish time, with no customer complaints logged and full tachograph compliance maintained throughout.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult or unhappy customer at a delivery point — how did you handle it?

Situation: On a chilled food delivery run, a convenience store owner refused to accept two pallets, claiming the order was incorrect. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute on the spot without delaying the remaining 14 drops on my schedule. Action: I calmly reviewed the delivery note with the customer, identified that one line item had been duplicated by the depot's picking team, and called the transport office to log a returns authorisation. I offloaded the correct goods and secured a signature, keeping the interaction professional throughout. Result: The customer accepted the delivery, the return was processed the same day, and the depot used the incident to update their picking checklist, preventing a recurrence.
