STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to motivate an underperforming sales team

When I joined a struggling branch, the 8-person team was 22% below target for three consecutive months. I identified that lack of product knowledge was affecting confidence with trade customers. I implemented weekly 30-minute training sessions focusing on key plumbing products and introduced a peer mentoring system pairing experienced staff with newer team members. Within 6 weeks, the team exceeded monthly targets by 12% and customer satisfaction scores improved from 3.2 to 4.6 out of 5. The training programme became a model for other branches.
2Question

Describe a situation where you exceeded sales targets while maintaining customer satisfaction

During a challenging quarter, I needed to increase sales by 18% while several trade customers complained about delivery delays. I restructured our delivery schedule to prioritise urgent jobs and introduced a customer communication system providing real-time updates. I also identified 15 dormant trade accounts and personally visited each one, resulting in £95k of reactivated business. We achieved 124% of target while improving customer satisfaction from 78% to 91%, proving that customer focus drives sustainable sales growth.
