STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a student with challenging behaviour

I worked with a Year 10 student who was frequently disrupting lessons and had 45% attendance. The situation required immediate intervention as his behaviour was affecting other students' learning. I implemented a structured support plan involving daily check-ins, clear behaviour expectations, and reward systems. I also worked with his form tutor to identify triggers and developed coping strategies he could use when feeling overwhelmed. Over 8 weeks, his classroom disruptions decreased by 70% and his attendance improved to 82%, allowing him to re-engage with his GCSE coursework.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build trust with a vulnerable young person

I was assigned to support a Year 8 student who had experienced trauma and was reluctant to engage with any adult support. She would often refuse to participate in sessions and showed signs of anxiety around authority figures. I took a patient approach, starting with brief 5-minute informal conversations about her interests rather than focusing on behaviour. I consistently followed through on small promises and respected her boundaries. After 3 weeks of building rapport, she began opening up about her challenges. This trust foundation enabled us to work together on emotional regulation techniques, and her self-referrals to the pastoral team increased from zero to 3 per week.
