1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a vulnerable young person overcome a significant challenge

A Year 10 student I was mentoring had severe anxiety affecting his attendance, missing 3 days per week. I established trust through consistent weekly 1:1 sessions, identifying his fear of group work as the root cause. I collaborated with his teachers to arrange alternative assessment methods and gradually reintroduced him to small group activities. Over 8 weeks, his attendance improved from 40% to 85%, and he successfully completed his GCSE coursework with additional support measures in place.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain calm while managing difficult behaviour

During a particularly challenging day, a Year 8 student became aggressive after receiving detention, shouting and throwing chairs in the corridor. I remained calm, spoke in a low, steady voice, and gave him space while ensuring other students' safety. I acknowledged his frustration about the detention and offered to discuss alternative solutions. After 10 minutes, he calmed down enough to talk through the underlying issues. We developed a behaviour plan that reduced his detentions by 80% over the following term.
