1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to remain calm in a challenging situation with a child

During my role supporting a Year 4 pupil with ADHD, he became frustrated during maths and threw his pencil case across the classroom, shouting at other children. I remained calm and used a quiet, steady voice to acknowledge his feelings whilst guiding him to our designated calm space. I gave him 3 minutes to regulate using breathing techniques we'd practised, then helped him return to the task with modified expectations. This approach prevented escalation and he completed 75% of the worksheet, compared to his usual 40% when dysregulated.
2Question

Describe a situation where you built rapport quickly with a difficult pupil

I was assigned to support a Year 6 pupil who had refused to engage with previous TAs and would often leave the classroom. I discovered through observation that he was passionate about football, so I incorporated football-themed maths problems and used football metaphors when explaining concepts. Within 2 weeks, he began staying in class for full lessons and his maths scores improved from 30% to 65%. The key was finding his interest and using it as a bridge to build trust and engagement.
