STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a child overcome a challenging behaviour

Situation: I was supporting a Year 3 pupil with autism who frequently had meltdowns during transitions between lessons. Task: I needed to help him develop coping strategies to manage these difficult moments. Action: I created a visual transition schedule with 5-minute warnings and introduced a calm-down box with sensory tools. I also established a quiet corner where he could retreat when feeling overwhelmed. Result: Over 8 weeks, his meltdowns reduced from daily occurrences to just twice per week, and he began using the visual cues independently to self-regulate.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach for a child's specific needs

Situation: I was working with a Year 2 child with dyslexia who was struggling with reading comprehension during literacy lessons. Task: I needed to find alternative ways to help her access the curriculum content. Action: I introduced audio books alongside text, used coloured overlays to reduce visual stress, and broke down reading tasks into 10-minute chunks with movement breaks. I also created picture-based story maps to support her understanding. Result: Her reading confidence improved significantly, and she achieved 85% comprehension scores on adapted assessments within 12 weeks.
