My background in retail and hospitality management has equipped me with a thorough grounding in cash and stock control, compliance with brand standards, and translating weekly KPI reports into concrete daily actions for a customer-facing team. STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you coached an underperforming team member and the outcome it produced.

Situation: A barista on my team was consistently receiving negative feedback on drink quality, which was pulling down our weekly mystery shopper scores from 91% to 84%. Task: As the senior on shift, it was my responsibility to address the performance gap before it affected the store's quarterly rating. Action: I scheduled three one-to-one coaching sessions over two weeks, focusing on milk texturing and recipe adherence, and paired the colleague with our most experienced barista during peak hours. I also introduced a brief daily huddle to share that week's quality targets. Result: Within four weeks, the individual's personal scores improved to 93%, and the store's overall mystery shopper rating recovered to 92% — our highest that quarter.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to step up and lead the store in the absence of your manager — what challenges did you face?

Situation: My Store Manager was signed off for two weeks at short notice during the December peak trading period, leaving me to run a 14-person team through the busiest fortnight of the year. Task: I needed to maintain service standards, manage the rota, and hit daily sales targets without any drop in customer satisfaction. Action: I restructured the weekly rota to ensure experienced staff covered the highest-footfall hours, held a brief team briefing each morning to set daily targets, and escalated one stock shortage to the area manager within 24 hours to avoid a menu gap. Result: We hit our sales target for both weeks, finishing 3% above the prior December, and received zero formal customer complaints during the period.
