Dear Hiring Manager,

Superdrug's reputation for accessible health and beauty and its structured Retailer Level 2 Apprenticeship programme are exactly what I have been looking for as I begin my retail career — which is why the Apprentice Sales Assistant role at your Cambridge Fitzroy Street store caught my attention immediately. I am confident in my customer communication skills and bring a genuine enthusiasm for health and beauty products that I am eager to develop in a hands-on retail environment.

My background in customer-facing situations has given me a solid foundation in staying positive under pressure, adapting to changing priorities, and working collaboratively towards shared goals. I hold a grade 4 GCSE in both English and Maths, meet all eligibility criteria for the apprenticeship, and am fully available for the 39-hour weekly shift pattern.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a change in your routine or environment.

Situation: During a school sports day I was volunteering at the refreshments stand when the lead organiser left unexpectedly mid-event. Task: I needed to take over managing the queue, handling payments, and keeping stock topped up simultaneously — tasks I had not been briefed on. Action: I quickly reorganised the counter layout so one person could manage the till while I restocked, and I communicated clearly with the two other volunteers about their new responsibilities. Result: We served over 120 students in 90 minutes with no queue exceeding five minutes, and the event coordinator praised the stand as the smoothest-running stall of the day.
2Question

Give an example of when you worked as part of a team to achieve a shared goal.

Situation: My GCSE art group was tasked with organising a whole-school exhibition in three weeks — a tight deadline with no budget. Task: As one of five students leading the project, I was responsible for sourcing display materials and coordinating the layout. Action: I divided the room into five themed zones, assigned two classmates to each zone, and held a 10-minute daily check-in to flag blockers early. I negotiated with the art department to borrow 30 display boards at no cost. Result: The exhibition opened on time, attracted over 200 visitors across two days, and the head of year described it as the best student-led event in four years.
