Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's reputation as the UK's leading food and drink wholesaler — serving over 190 cash and carry branches — is exactly the kind of operation I want to be part of as a 3.5T Delivery Driver. I hold a full Cat B licence with over three years of multi-drop delivery experience, and I understand the importance of accurate paperwork, safe manual handling, and delivering on time to keep customers' shelves stocked.

My background in local delivery driving has equipped me with strong route awareness across Norfolk and the surrounding area, as well as the interpersonal skills needed to build reliable relationships with regular customers. I am comfortable working across a 7-day operation, including weekends, and I take pride in representing an employer professionally at every customer premises I visit.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a situation where you were running behind schedule on your delivery route — what did you do?

Situation: During a busy Friday shift, a road closure added 40 minutes to my planned route, putting 6 remaining drops at risk of being late. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within the agreed time windows to avoid customer complaints. Action: I immediately contacted the branch to flag the delay, then re-ordered my remaining drops by proximity using my knowledge of the local roads, cutting unnecessary backtracking. I also called ahead to two time-sensitive customers to manage their expectations. Result: I completed all 6 drops within 15 minutes of the original windows, and both customers I had called specifically thanked me for the communication. No complaints were logged.
2Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult customer during a delivery and how you resolved it.

Situation: A regular catering customer received a delivery where two cases of a product were short-picked at the branch, which they only discovered as I was unloading. Task: The customer was frustrated as it was a Friday and they needed the stock for the weekend. Action: I listened calmly, acknowledged the issue without becoming defensive, and immediately radioed the branch to confirm the shortage and request an urgent re-delivery for that afternoon. I documented the discrepancy accurately on the paperwork and ensured the customer signed to confirm what was received. Result: The branch arranged a same-day top-up delivery, the customer received their full order by 2pm, and they remained on the route without escalating the complaint.
