STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer during a delivery

Situation: I was delivering to a busy café during their morning rush when the manager complained that our previous delivery was 30 minutes late, affecting their breakfast service. Task: I needed to address their concern while completing the current delivery efficiently. Action: I apologised sincerely, explained our new route optimisation system, and offered to prioritise their future deliveries at 7:30am rather than our usual 8am slot. I also provided my direct contact number for any urgent delivery issues. Result: The customer appreciated the proactive solution, and we maintained their business worth £1,200 monthly. They later recommended us to two neighbouring businesses.
2Question

How do you handle tight delivery schedules when facing unexpected delays?

Situation: During a particularly busy Friday, roadworks on the A52 added 45 minutes to my route, putting 8 remaining deliveries at risk of being late. Task: I needed to recover the lost time while maintaining service quality and safety standards. Action: I immediately contacted the depot to inform them of the delay, then called ahead to the next 3 customers to provide updated arrival times. I reorganised my route to prioritise the most time-sensitive deliveries and requested assistance from a colleague for the final 2 stops. Result: We completed all deliveries within 20 minutes of the original schedule, maintained customer satisfaction at 96%, and avoided any stock shortages at customer premises.
