STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you identified a safeguarding concern and how you handled it.

Situation: During a morning session at my previous nursery, I noticed a 3-year-old had unexplained bruising on their arm and appeared withdrawn compared to their usual behaviour. Task: As the key person, it was my responsibility to follow the nursery's safeguarding policy and escalate appropriately. Action: I calmly documented my observations with timestamps, avoided questioning the child directly, and immediately reported my concerns to the designated safeguarding lead. I ensured the child remained supervised and comfortable throughout. Result: The DSL contacted the local authority the same day. The situation was investigated promptly, and the child received the appropriate support. The process reinforced the importance of acting swiftly and following procedure without delay.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to support a different age group or room at short notice.

Situation: A colleague called in sick on a busy Monday morning, leaving the baby room short-staffed with 8 children under 18 months. Task: My manager asked me to cover the baby room for the full day, despite my usual placement being in the 2–3 room. Action: I quickly reviewed the room's daily routine, familiarised myself with individual care plans, and liaised with the remaining staff member to maintain ratios and consistency. I adapted my communication style and activities to suit the younger age group. Result: The session ran without incident, all nap and feeding schedules were maintained, and the room leader noted my flexibility in my end-of-placement review, leading to a 4-week extension of my contract.
