STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer during a delivery and how you resolved it.

Situation: A regular customer at a busy café in Glasgow was unhappy because three items on their order had been substituted without prior notice. Task: I needed to resolve their frustration on the spot and maintain the relationship for future deliveries. Action: I listened without interrupting, acknowledged the inconvenience, and immediately contacted my depot to confirm the substitution reason and estimated restock date. I also provided the customer with the depot manager's direct number. Result: The customer thanked me for the transparency and continued to be on my regular route. My supervisor noted the positive feedback in my quarterly review, and the account retained its full weekly order value of approximately £1,400.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to a change in your delivery schedule or route.

Situation: Midway through a 22-stop delivery shift, a road closure due to a burst water main blocked my planned route through the town centre. Task: I had to reroute on the fly to avoid missing the remaining 14 deliveries within their agreed time windows. Action: I pulled over safely, used the in-cab navigation to identify an alternative route adding roughly 8 miles, then called ahead to the next three customers to update their estimated arrival times. Result: All 14 remaining deliveries were completed within 25 minutes of the original schedule, with no complaints raised. My depot manager highlighted this as an example of good initiative at the next team briefing.
