STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer during a delivery and how you resolved it.

Situation: A regular café owner on my route refused a delivery of 12 cases of ambient stock, claiming the order was incorrect, despite the manifest matching exactly. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute on the spot without delaying the remaining 14 drops on my round. Action: I calmly walked the customer through the original order confirmation line by line, identified that one SKU had been substituted by the warehouse, and immediately called the depot to arrange a credit note and replacement delivery for the following morning. Result: The customer accepted the remaining goods, the credit was processed the same day, and they specifically mentioned my handling of the situation in a positive feedback call to my manager the following week.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage a delay on your route — what did you do and what was the outcome?

Situation: Midway through a 20-drop shift, I encountered a road closure due to an accident that blocked my planned route through the town centre, putting me approximately 45 minutes behind schedule. Task: I had four time-sensitive deliveries to a school canteen and two restaurants that needed stock before their lunchtime service. Action: I pulled over safely, used my knowledge of the local area to reroute, prioritised the time-critical drops first, and proactively called ahead to the remaining customers to update their expected arrival times. Result: All four priority customers received their deliveries before their service windows, and I completed the full 20-drop round only 20 minutes later than planned, with no complaints logged.
