STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage challenging behaviour in your KS2 classroom

In my Year 5 class, I had a pupil who frequently disrupted lessons by calling out and leaving his seat. I implemented a positive behaviour chart system where he earned points for staying seated and raising his hand. I also gave him specific classroom responsibilities like distributing materials. Within 3 weeks, his disruptive behaviour decreased by 80% and his academic engagement improved significantly. The strategy worked so well that I adapted it for 3 other pupils, creating a more positive learning environment for the entire class of 29 children.
2Question

Describe how you have contributed to a supportive team environment in a previous role

At my previous primary school, I noticed our Year 5 and 6 teachers were struggling with SATs preparation workload. I initiated weekly planning sessions where we shared resources and divided preparation tasks. I created 15 practice papers and shared assessment rubrics, while colleagues contributed reading comprehension materials. This collaborative approach reduced individual planning time by 4 hours per week and improved our combined SATs results by 18%. The headteacher adopted this model school-wide, and it became part of our regular practice across all year groups.
