Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead your CV personal statement with your PQE level and explicit mention of wills, trusts and probate experience, as the advert specifies 5+ PQE as a hard requirement.

2

📊 Quantify your caseload: e.g. 'Managed a caseload of 80+ active private client matters including complex multi-trust estates valued over £2M'.

3

🎯 Highlight any STEP qualification or progress towards it prominently — the advert flags this as a key differentiator and lists it as an ideal attribute.

4

🤝 Include a dedicated 'Business Development' section or bullet points showing networking activity, referral generation or cross-departmental collaboration, as the advert explicitly seeks someone to support BD strategy.

5

🌐 Reference Court of Protection and Lasting Powers of Attorney experience explicitly in your skills section, as these are called out as distinct responsibilities within the role.

Dear Hiring Manager,

QED Legal's Wills, Trusts & Probate Associate role at this well-regarded North East regional firm is precisely the next step I have been seeking. With 5+ years PQE in private client law, I bring hands-on expertise in trust creation and administration, estate planning, Court of Protection applications and Lasting Powers of Attorney — the core competencies your advert identifies as essential.

My background in private client practice has seen me manage caseloads of over 75 active matters simultaneously, advising high-net-worth individuals on multi-trust estates and guiding families through complex probate processes. I am currently progressing towards my STEP qualification and have actively contributed to business development by building referral networks with local financial advisers, generating approximately £40,000 in new instructions over 12 months.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a particularly complex probate matter — what challenges arose and how did you resolve them?

Situation: I was instructed on an estate worth approximately £2.4M involving three discretionary trusts, six beneficiaries across two countries and a disputed property valuation. Task: I needed to obtain a grant of probate, resolve the valuation dispute with HMRC and distribute the estate within the executor's 12-month target. Action: I instructed a specialist RICS surveyor, negotiated directly with the HMRC Shares and Assets Valuation team to agree a revised figure, and coordinated with a French notaire for the overseas assets. Result: The estate was fully administered in 11 months, the revised HMRC valuation saved the estate £38,000 in inheritance tax, and the executors formally commended the service in writing.
2Question

Give an example of how you have contributed to business development at a previous firm — what was the outcome?

Situation: My previous firm had limited referral relationships with local financial advisers despite being in a region with a large retired population. Task: I was asked to develop a structured outreach programme to generate new private client instructions. Action: I organised four breakfast seminars over six months, targeting IFAs and accountants, presenting on inheritance tax planning changes and trust structuring options. I followed up each event with tailored one-to-one meetings. Result: Within 12 months, I had established formal referral agreements with eight IFA firms, generating 34 new client instructions and approximately £52,000 in additional fee income for the department.
