STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a new hospital environment

When I started at Royal Devon Hospital, I discovered their vascular protocols differed significantly from my previous trust. Within my first week, I shadowed 3 senior sonographers to understand their carotid scanning techniques and reporting systems. I created a quick reference guide for their specific equipment settings and measurement criteria. By week two, I was independently performing 25 scans daily while maintaining their quality standards. This proactive approach helped me integrate seamlessly and earn the team's confidence quickly.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work under pressure in the vascular lab

During a particularly busy Friday, we had 8 urgent carotid studies requested by stroke consultants, all requiring completion before weekend handover. With one colleague off sick, I reorganised the schedule to prioritise critical cases first. I streamlined my scanning technique while maintaining diagnostic quality, completing all 8 urgent studies plus 12 routine appointments within 7 hours. The stroke team received all reports by 4pm, enabling them to make weekend treatment decisions. My efficiency under pressure prevented patient delays and supported critical clinical pathways.
