STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

How do you provide emotional support to anxious patients during mammography?

During a particularly busy screening clinic, I encountered a patient who was extremely anxious about her first mammogram due to family history of breast cancer. I took extra time to explain the procedure step-by-step, showing her the equipment and demonstrating positioning techniques. I maintained calm, reassuring communication throughout the 15-minute examination and provided information about follow-up timelines. The patient later wrote to thank the department, and our patient satisfaction scores increased by 8% that quarter following similar approaches with anxious patients.
2Question

Tell me about a time you identified a potential issue in a mammogram

While reviewing mammography images during a routine screening session, I noticed subtle density changes in a 52-year-old patient's left breast that weren't present in her previous mammogram from 18 months earlier. I immediately flagged the images for radiologist review and ensured the patient was recalled within 48 hours for additional views. The subsequent biopsy confirmed early-stage ductal carcinoma, allowing for prompt treatment. This case reinforced the importance of thorough image analysis and comparison with previous studies, leading to earlier detection for 3 additional patients that month.
