STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to diagnose a complex vehicle fault

Situation: A commercial van came into our workshop with intermittent engine cutting out that three previous garages couldn't solve. Task: I needed to identify the root cause within our 2-day service window. Action: I systematically tested the fuel system, electrical connections, and ECU data, discovering a faulty crankshaft position sensor that only failed when hot. I replaced the sensor and conducted extensive road testing. Result: The van ran perfectly for 6 months with no return visits, and the customer praised our thorough diagnostic approach, leading to a £2,400 annual service contract.
2Question

How do you prioritise multiple vehicle repairs in a busy workshop?

Situation: During peak season, I managed 8 vehicles simultaneously including 3 urgent MOT failures and 5 routine services. Task: I needed to complete all work within deadline while maintaining quality standards. Action: I created a priority matrix based on customer pickup times, parts availability, and job complexity. I tackled MOT failures first thing each morning when concentration was highest, then batched similar routine tasks like oil changes together. Result: I completed all 8 jobs on schedule with 100% customer satisfaction scores and generated £3,200 in additional work through proactive maintenance recommendations.
