STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to maintain high accuracy under time pressure during a stock count.

Situation: During a one-day stock-take at a chilled food distribution warehouse, the team was 45 minutes behind schedule by mid-morning due to a late site induction. Task: I needed to complete my assigned aisle of 600 SKUs accurately within the remaining window to avoid overtime costs for the client. Action: I reorganised my counting sequence to work systematically from floor to top shelf, cross-checking every 50 lines against the count sheet before moving on. I flagged two discrepancies immediately to the supervisor rather than resolving them alone. Result: I completed my section on time with zero recount requests, and the overall team finished the full warehouse count by 4:45pm with a 99.7% first-count accuracy rate.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified an error in an inventory record — what did you do?

Situation: While working a stock-take shift at a freezer storage facility, I noticed that 24 cases of a product were physically present on the shelf but the count sheet showed zero units expected. Task: I needed to determine whether this was a system error, a mislabelled product, or a genuine unrecorded delivery. Action: I paused my count, photographed the shelf location and barcode, and reported the discrepancy immediately to the site supervisor rather than adjusting the figure myself. I also recounted the adjacent bays to rule out a misplacement. Result: The supervisor confirmed it was an unrecorded goods-in entry. The inventory was corrected before the final count was submitted, preventing a £340 stock write-off for the client.
