1Question

Tell me about a time you had to show exceptional patience with a challenging student

A 17-year-old student with autism was struggling with swimming sessions, becoming distressed and refusing to enter the pool for 3 weeks. I recognised this was sensory overload rather than defiance. I gradually introduced water exposure through hand-washing activities, then shallow paddling pools, building trust over 6 weeks. I maintained calm, positive encouragement throughout each small step. Eventually, the student not only entered the main pool but completed 2 lengths independently, boosting their confidence significantly and improving their overall engagement in other activities by 60%.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your teaching approach for a student with special needs

I was supporting a student with severe speech difficulties during cooking sessions who couldn't follow verbal instructions. Traditional recipe cards weren't working either due to reading challenges. I created a visual step-by-step system using photographs of each cooking stage, combined with simple hand gestures. I also broke down complex tasks like 'make pasta sauce' into 8 individual photo cards showing chopping, heating oil, adding ingredients. This approach reduced the student's frustration episodes from daily occurrences to once weekly, and they successfully completed 12 different recipes independently over 4 months.
