1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a struggling pupil engage in learning

A Year 2 pupil with autism was refusing to participate in phonics lessons and becoming distressed. I observed that he responded well to visual cues, so I created a personalised phonics board with his favourite cartoon characters representing different sounds. I introduced this gradually over 3 days, starting with just 5 minutes per session. By week 2, he was actively participating in 15-minute sessions and his reading confidence improved significantly. His teacher noted a 40% increase in his phonics assessment scores by the end of term.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour

A Year 4 pupil with ADHD was disrupting lessons by calling out and leaving his seat frequently. I worked with the class teacher to implement a traffic light behaviour system specifically for him. When he showed green behaviour, he earned 5 minutes of preferred activity time. I provided consistent positive reinforcement and clear warnings before consequences. Within 3 weeks, his disruptive behaviours reduced by 70%, and other pupils began asking for similar support systems.
