STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to be particularly patient with a challenging pupil

I worked with a Year 3 pupil with severe ADHD who frequently disrupted lessons and struggled to focus for more than 2 minutes. I implemented a structured reward system using visual timers and movement breaks every 10 minutes. Initially, he could only manage 3-minute focused periods, but I gradually extended these intervals. After 6 weeks of consistent application, he achieved 15-minute focused work sessions and his classroom disruptions reduced by 80%. The key was maintaining calm consistency and celebrating small wins, which built his confidence and self-regulation skills.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach for a child with specific learning needs

I supported a Year 5 pupil with dyslexia who was falling behind in reading comprehension. Traditional text-based methods weren't working, so I introduced multi-sensory learning techniques including coloured overlays, audio recordings, and kinesthetic activities. I created story maps using pictures and symbols, allowing her to demonstrate understanding without relying solely on written responses. Within 8 weeks, her reading confidence improved dramatically and she progressed 2 reading levels. This experience taught me the importance of flexible, creative approaches tailored to individual learning styles.
