STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a child with SEN overcome a learning challenge

Situation: I was supporting Jamie, a Year 3 pupil with Autism who struggled with maths transitions and would become distressed when moving between activities. Task: I needed to help him engage with numeracy lessons without disrupting the class. Action: I created a visual schedule showing each maths activity with timers, and introduced a 2-minute warning system before transitions. I also established a quiet corner where Jamie could regulate if needed. Result: Within 4 weeks, Jamie's maths engagement improved from 20% to 85% of lesson time, and his distress episodes reduced from daily to once per week.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour calmly

Situation: During a literacy session, Sam, a pupil with ADHD, became frustrated with writing tasks and started throwing pencils, disrupting 8 other children. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation while maintaining a safe learning environment. Action: I calmly approached Sam, acknowledged his frustration, and offered him a choice between taking 3 deep breaths or having a 2-minute movement break. I used a quiet, steady voice and gave him space. Result: Sam chose the movement break, returned focused within 5 minutes, and completed 75% of his writing task. The other pupils remained engaged throughout.
