STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your approach when working with someone with additional needs

While supporting a Year 3 pupil with autism, I noticed traditional verbal instructions caused anxiety and meltdowns. I researched visual communication methods and created a picture schedule showing daily activities. I introduced this gradually over 2 weeks, starting with just morning routines. The pupil's anxiety reduced significantly - from 3 meltdowns per day to less than 1 per week. This taught me the importance of individualised approaches and observing what works for each child rather than applying one-size-fits-all methods.
2Question

Describe a situation where you showed resilience in a challenging environment

During my placement at a specialist school, I worked with a Year 8 pupil with severe SEMH needs who frequently displayed aggressive behaviour. Despite facing verbal abuse and having materials thrown at me daily for 3 weeks, I maintained consistent boundaries and positive reinforcement. I collaborated with the SENCO to develop a behaviour plan using de-escalation techniques. By week 4, the pupil began engaging positively, completing 80% of tasks compared to 20% initially. This experience strengthened my commitment to supporting vulnerable young people through their most challenging moments.
