1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to a new school environment

When I started covering at a new secondary school in Sheffield, I discovered their behaviour management system was completely different from my previous placement. The school used a traffic light system rather than verbal warnings. Within my first morning, I observed 3 other teachers and asked the head of year for a quick briefing. I adapted my approach immediately, using the green-amber-red cards consistently. By day 3, I had successfully managed 2 challenging Year 9 classes with zero disruptions, and the deputy head commented on how quickly I had integrated their systems.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour in a classroom

During a Year 10 PE lesson, 3 students refused to participate and were disrupting others by throwing equipment. I calmly separated them from the main group and gave them specific roles as equipment monitors and score keepers. This redirected their energy positively while maintaining their involvement. I also privately spoke with each student to understand their concerns - one had forgotten kit, another felt self-conscious. By addressing root causes and giving them responsibility, all 3 students re-engaged fully, and the lesson proceeded smoothly with 100% participation.
