STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to quickly adapt to a challenging classroom situation

During a Year 9 science cover lesson, I discovered the planned experiment required equipment that wasn't available due to a lab incident. With 28 students expecting a practical lesson, I quickly adapted by creating an interactive demonstration using everyday items I found in the prep room. I turned the missing equipment into a problem-solving exercise, having students predict outcomes and explain the science behind everyday phenomena. The students remained fully engaged, and the regular teacher later commented that several students mentioned it was one of their favourite lessons. This experience reinforced my ability to think creatively under pressure while maintaining educational value.
2Question

Describe how you build rapport with students when you're only teaching them temporarily

When covering a Year 8 English class for two weeks, I started each lesson by learning three new names and asking students about their interests related to the topic. I discovered several students were passionate about gaming, so I incorporated gaming references into our creative writing exercises about character development. By the end of the first week, I had established clear expectations while showing genuine interest in their perspectives. The students responded positively, with 95% completing their assignments and several asking if I'd be their permanent teacher. Building these quick connections requires active listening and finding common ground, even in short-term placements.
