STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built a positive relationship with a pupil who was initially resistant to support.

Situation: I was assigned to support a 10-year-old boy with autism who had previously refused all 1:1 intervention, often leaving the classroom when approached. Task: My goal was to build enough trust for him to engage with his literacy targets without feeling singled out. Action: I spent the first two weeks simply sitting nearby during independent work, offering help only when he initiated. I introduced a shared interest in trains as a low-pressure conversation starter, then gradually linked this to reading activities. Result: Within six weeks he was voluntarily attending our 20-minute daily sessions, and his reading age improved by four months over the term, noted in his EHCP review.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach mid-session because a pupil's needs changed unexpectedly.

Situation: During a planned numeracy intervention with a Year 5 pupil who had ADHD, she arrived visibly distressed following an incident at break time. Task: I needed to decide whether to proceed with the planned activity or address her emotional state first. Action: I set aside the numeracy task and used a simple feelings check-in card to help her identify and name her emotions, then offered a five-minute regulated breathing exercise we had practised previously. Once she was calm, I introduced a shortened, game-based version of the maths activity. Result: She completed 80% of the session's objectives, and her class teacher noted it as a strong example of co-regulation in her support log.
