STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you identified a long-running problem and implemented a solution

Situation: Our hydraulic press was experiencing recurring seal failures every 6 weeks, causing 8 hours of downtime each time. Task: I needed to identify the root cause and implement a permanent solution. Action: I analysed maintenance records over 12 months and discovered the seals were failing due to contaminated hydraulic fluid from inadequate filtration. I proposed upgrading the filtration system and implementing monthly fluid quality checks. Result: After implementing these changes, we eliminated seal failures completely over the following 9 months, saving £3,200 in replacement parts and 48 hours of lost production time.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to communicate technical issues to production staff

Situation: A conveyor motor was showing early signs of bearing failure during routine inspection, but production needed to continue running. Task: I had to explain the technical issue and coordinate a planned shutdown to prevent catastrophic failure. Action: I created a simple diagram showing the bearing condition and explained that continuing to run risked a 3-day emergency shutdown versus a planned 4-hour maintenance window. I worked with the production supervisor to schedule the repair during the next planned break. Result: We completed the bearing replacement in 3.5 hours during scheduled downtime, preventing what could have been a £12,000 emergency repair and 72 hours of lost production.
