STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a child who became distressed — how did you de-escalate the situation?

Situation: During a morning transition at a specialist SEN school, a 9-year-old pupil with PMLD became highly distressed when a familiar routine was disrupted due to a staff absence. Task: I needed to de-escalate quickly to prevent physical harm and restore calm before the class session began. Action: I moved the pupil to a quieter sensory corner, used a familiar tactile object from her communication toolkit, and maintained a low, steady voice while signalling to the class teacher. I followed the pupil's individual behaviour support plan throughout. Result: The pupil settled within 8 minutes, the session started only 10 minutes late, and the incident was documented and shared with the SENCO to update the support plan.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change in a pupil's needs or routine.

Situation: Midway through a feeding routine with a pupil who had complex swallowing needs, I noticed a change in the pupil's breathing pattern that had not been present before. Task: I had to act swiftly while staying calm to ensure the pupil's safety and alert the appropriate staff. Action: I paused the feeding immediately, repositioned the pupil as per the moving and handling guidance in his care plan, and alerted the class teacher and school nurse within 90 seconds. I stayed with the pupil and monitored his colour and breathing until the nurse arrived. Result: The nurse confirmed early signs of aspiration risk; the feeding plan was reviewed the same day and updated with the speech and language therapist, preventing a potentially serious incident.
