SEND Specialist Tutor Job - Tiverton

Prospero Teaching is looking for SEND Specialist Tutors to deliver bespoke tuition packages on a 1:1 basis to young people with SEND that cannot currently access mainstream education.

The Opportunity

We are looking for inspirational tutors around Tiverton to support children and young people with SEND. Many children with SEND have been disengaged with their learning. We support pupils that have struggled to stay in the classroom, who feel too anxious to go to school or whose needs aren't sufficiently supported at school.

As a SEND Specialist Tutor, you must be able to create, plan and deliver 1:1 tailored lesson to bridge gaps in pupil's education and boost attainment levels. You may be an experienced tutor or teacher or have experience of working with children in a therapeutic way. One of your aims will be to support and re-engage a pupil in their learning, offer structure back into their daily routine, continue their educational development and return to school.

The tuition is replacing school for these young people and is normally part-time, taking place during school hours, five days a week. Prospero will work with you closely to monitor the progression with each pupil by asking you to submit weekly reports.

1Question

Tell me about a time you worked with a particularly challenging or disengaged pupil

I worked with a 14-year-old pupil with severe school phobia who hadn't attended lessons for 6 months. Initially, he would only engage for 10 minutes before becoming distressed. I started sessions in his home environment, focusing on his interest in gaming to build rapport. I gradually introduced educational content through game-based learning, extending sessions by 5 minutes weekly. After 12 weeks, he was attending 2-hour sessions and had completed his English GCSE coursework. The key was patience and meeting him where he felt safe.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to think creatively to engage a reluctant learner

I had a 12-year-old pupil with autism who refused to engage with traditional maths worksheets, often becoming upset and shutting down. Knowing he loved trains, I created a railway timetable project where he had to calculate journey times, distances, and costs. He became so engaged that he started arriving early for sessions. Over 8 weeks, his numeracy skills improved by 18 months, and he began requesting additional maths challenges. This experience taught me the power of connecting curriculum content to pupils' special interests.
