SEND Specialist Tutor Job - Gloucester

Prospero Teaching is looking for SEND Specialist Tutors to deliver bespoke tuition packages on a 1:1 basis to young people with SEND that cannot currently access mainstream education.

The Opportunity

We are looking for inspirational tutors around Gloucester to support children and young people with SEND. Many children with SEND have been disengaged with their learning. We support pupils that have struggled to stay in the classroom, who feel too anxious to go to school or whose needs aren't sufficiently supported at school.

As a SEND Specialist Tutor, you must be able to create, plan and deliver 1:1 tailored lesson to bridge gaps in pupil's education and boost attainment levels. You may be an experienced tutor or teacher or have experience of working with children in a therapeutic way. One of your aims will be to support and re-engage a pupil in their learning, offer structure back into their daily routine, continue their educational development and return to school.

The tuition is replacing school for these young people and is normally part-time, taking place during school hours, five days a week. Prospero will work with you closely to monitor the progression with each pupil by asking you to submit weekly reports.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully re-engaged a disengaged pupil in their learning

I worked with a 12-year-old pupil with severe anxiety who hadn't attended school for 4 months. Initially, he would only engage for 10 minutes before becoming overwhelmed. I started sessions in his comfort zone at home, using his interest in trains to create maths and literacy activities. I gradually introduced structure, beginning with 20-minute sessions twice weekly. By incorporating visual timetables and regular breaks, I extended sessions to 90 minutes daily within 8 weeks. The pupil's confidence grew significantly, and he successfully transitioned back to school after 5 months of tuition.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage challenging behaviour during a lesson

During a literacy session, a 10-year-old pupil with ADHD became frustrated with writing tasks and threw materials across the room. Rather than confronting the behaviour directly, I calmly acknowledged his frustration and suggested a 5-minute movement break. I then adapted the lesson to use voice recording instead of writing, allowing him to express his ideas verbally first. This approach reduced his anxiety and we completed the learning objective successfully. I implemented regular movement breaks and choice-based activities in subsequent sessions, which reduced disruptive incidents by 80% over the following month.
