1Question

Tell me about a time you supported a pupil with autism who was struggling to engage in a lesson — what did you do and what was the outcome?

Situation: A Year 4 pupil with autism I supported regularly became overwhelmed during whole-class literacy sessions, often leaving his seat and refusing to participate. Task: I needed to find a way to help him re-engage without disrupting the rest of the class. Action: I introduced a Now and Next visual card paired with a short sensory break of two minutes before each session, and worked with the SENCO to create a simplified visual timetable for his desk. I also used Makaton signs to reinforce key instructions. Result: Within four weeks, the pupil was completing 80% of each lesson at his desk, and his class teacher noted a significant reduction in exit-seeking behaviour during literacy.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to remain calm and patient during a challenging behavioural incident. How did you handle it?

Situation: During a transition between lessons, a pupil I supported became extremely distressed and began shouting and knocking over chairs in the corridor. Task: I needed to de-escalate the situation quickly to keep the pupil and other children safe. Action: I used a low, steady voice, moved other pupils away calmly, and gave the pupil clear, simple choices using Now and Next language — 'First quiet space, then snack.' I avoided direct eye contact and gave him processing time of around 30 seconds between each prompt. Result: The pupil self-regulated within approximately five minutes and was able to re-enter the classroom. The incident was documented and the strategy was added to his support plan by the SENCO.
