STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you built trust with a challenging student

I worked with a Year 8 student who had severe anxiety and would refuse to participate in lessons. Initially, he would hide under desks and become aggressive when approached. I started by simply sitting nearby without demanding interaction, offering consistent calm presence. After 3 weeks, I began bringing drawing materials he enjoyed. Gradually, he started showing me his artwork and sharing worries about home. Within 2 months, he was attending full lessons and achieved his first positive behaviour point in 18 months. The key was patience and meeting him where he was emotionally.
2Question

How do you handle rejection or difficult behaviour from students?

During a maths lesson, a Year 9 student with ADHD threw his books and shouted that he was 'stupid' when struggling with fractions. Rather than addressing the behaviour directly, I calmly acknowledged his frustration and suggested we break the problem into smaller steps. I used visual aids and gave him movement breaks every 10 minutes. By the end of the session, he had completed 4 fraction problems successfully. I learned that challenging behaviour often masks learning anxiety, so addressing the root cause is more effective than focusing on the behaviour itself.
