1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to show patience with a challenging situation

I was supporting a 9-year-old boy with severe autism who became extremely distressed during fire alarm practice. He was covering his ears, rocking, and refusing to move from his desk while 28 other children evacuated. Rather than rushing him, I calmly sat beside him, used his visual communication cards to explain the situation, and gave him noise-cancelling headphones. I stayed with him for 8 minutes until he felt ready to walk to the assembly point. The teacher later praised my patience, and we developed a personalised fire drill plan that reduced his anxiety by 80% in future practices.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to build a relationship with a reluctant child

I worked with a 7-year-old girl with selective mutism who hadn't spoken to any adult at school for 6 months. She would hide under tables and refuse to participate in activities. I started by simply sitting near her during art sessions without pressuring her to interact. Over 3 weeks, I learned she loved drawing horses, so I began leaving horse stickers on her desk. By week 4, she started pointing to pictures to communicate with me. After 8 weeks of consistent, gentle interaction, she whispered her first word to me during reading time. Her confidence grew, and she eventually participated in small group activities.
