STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a pupil with challenging behaviour

A Year 7 pupil with ADHD was disrupting lessons daily, throwing materials and refusing to engage. I observed his triggers were transitions and loud noises. I created a visual schedule showing lesson structure and arranged a quiet corner with noise-cancelling headphones. Within 3 weeks, his disruptive incidents dropped from 8 per day to 2 per week. His academic engagement improved by 60% as measured by task completion rates, and he began participating in group discussions.
2Question

Give an example of when you've had to adapt your teaching approach

I had a mixed-ability class including 4 pupils with Autism who struggled with verbal instructions. My original lesson plan relied heavily on spoken explanations. I redesigned it using visual aids, breaking tasks into 5-minute chunks with picture cards showing each step. I also introduced movement breaks every 15 minutes. The result was 85% task completion compared to 40% previously, and all pupils with Autism successfully completed the main learning objective.
