STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you remained calm while supporting challenging behaviour

During my work at a youth centre, I supported a 14-year-old with attachment issues who became aggressive when frustrated with maths tasks. When he threw his workbook and started shouting, I remained calm and used de-escalation techniques, speaking quietly and giving him space. I acknowledged his frustration and offered alternative ways to express his feelings. After 10 minutes, he was ready to try again with modified tasks. This approach reduced similar incidents by 70% over the following month, and he began asking for help rather than acting out when struggling.
2Question

Give an example of how you've helped a young person with emotional regulation

I worked with a 13-year-old girl with SEMH needs who struggled with anxiety-triggered outbursts during group activities. I introduced a traffic light system where she could signal her emotional state using coloured cards. When she showed amber, we practiced breathing techniques together. Red meant she needed a 5-minute break in our quiet space. Over 8 weeks, her self-regulation improved dramatically, with outbursts reducing from daily occurrences to once per week. She eventually became confident enough to use these strategies independently and even helped other pupils learn the system.
