1Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt your teaching approach for a particularly challenging pupil

I had a Year 6 pupil with severe autism who became overwhelmed by traditional group activities. I observed that he responded well to visual schedules, so I restructured my lessons to include individual visual task cards and created a quiet corner with sensory tools. Within 3 weeks, his participation increased from 20% to 75% of lesson time, and his anxiety-related behaviours decreased significantly. I shared this approach with the team, and we implemented similar strategies across 8 other pupils with positive results.
2Question

Describe a situation where you helped a student with emotional regulation difficulties

A Year 4 pupil with complex needs was having daily meltdowns during transitions, disrupting learning for the whole class. I worked with the SENCO to develop a personalised transition plan using a 5-minute warning system and a special transition object. I also taught him breathing techniques using a visual countdown timer. Over 6 weeks, his meltdowns reduced from daily occurrences to just 2 per week, and his confidence in managing emotions improved dramatically, allowing him to participate more fully in classroom activities.
