STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a challenging situation with a SEN student and how you handled it

A Year 8 student with severe autism was having daily meltdowns during transitions, disrupting the class of 12 students. I observed his triggers and noticed fluorescent lighting was a factor. I worked with the facilities team to install dimmer switches and created a visual transition schedule with 5-minute warnings. I also established a quiet corner with sensory tools. Within 3 weeks, meltdowns reduced from daily to once weekly, and his academic engagement improved by 70% as measured through our tracking system.
2Question

How do you work collaboratively with support staff and therapists?

When supporting a student with PMLD who wasn't responding to communication attempts, I initiated weekly planning meetings with the speech therapist, occupational therapist, and 2 teaching assistants. We developed a unified approach using Makaton signs and sensory cues. I created shared tracking sheets so all team members could record observations. After 6 weeks of consistent implementation, the student began using 8 functional signs and showed 90% improvement in following simple instructions during structured activities.
