1Question

Tell me about a time you had to challenge a client's assumptions during a research project

A retail client wanted to survey only their existing customers about a new product launch, assuming this would give them the best insights. I recognised this would create significant sampling bias and miss potential new customer segments. I presented alternative approaches including a mixed methodology with both customer and non-customer samples. I showed them how their proposed approach could lead to overestimating demand by up to 30% based on similar studies. The client agreed to expand the sample, and the research revealed that 40% of interest came from non-customers, completely changing their launch strategy and saving them from a costly targeting mistake.
2Question

Describe a situation where you mentored a junior researcher through a complex project

I was assigned to mentor a graduate researcher on their first multi-country brand tracking study covering 8 European markets. They were struggling with questionnaire design for cultural differences and sampling methodology. I set up weekly one-to-one sessions and created a structured learning plan covering survey design principles, cultural adaptation techniques, and quality control processes. I reviewed their work at each stage, providing detailed feedback and explaining the reasoning behind corrections. By project completion, they had successfully delivered all 8 country reports on time, and their confidence had grown significantly. The client praised the quality of insights, and the junior researcher was promoted to researcher level within 6 months.
