1Question

Tell me about a time you provided person-centred care to someone with learning disabilities

I supported James, a 28-year-old with moderate learning disabilities who wanted to learn cooking skills. I assessed his abilities and interests, discovering he loved Italian food. Over 8 weeks, I developed a structured cooking programme starting with simple pasta dishes. I broke down each step visually, used timers for safety, and celebrated small victories. By the end, James could independently prepare 3 meals and his confidence increased dramatically. His family reported he was more engaged at home, and his key worker noted improved fine motor skills. This person-centred approach focused on his interests and goals rather than just basic care needs.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work independently in a service user's home

I was assigned to support Sarah, who lived independently but needed assistance with medication management and household tasks. During my first solo visit, I discovered she had missed 2 days of medication and was anxious about an upcoming GP appointment. I immediately contacted the on-call manager, documented the medication gap, and arranged emergency support. I then spent 90 minutes helping Sarah organise her weekly pill dispenser and created a visual reminder system. I accompanied her to the GP appointment the next day, advocating for her needs. This experience taught me the importance of thorough assessment, clear documentation, and knowing when to escalate concerns while maintaining service user dignity.
