1Question

Tell me about a time you responded to an emergency or urgent change in a service user's condition — what did you do?

Situation: During an evening shift at a residential care home, a 78-year-old resident became suddenly confused and unresponsive after dinner. Task: As the senior support worker on duty, I needed to assess the situation quickly and ensure her safety. Action: I checked her vital signs, identified she was showing signs of a hypoglycaemic episode, and immediately contacted the on-call nurse while keeping the resident calm and administering a glucose drink as per her care plan. I documented the incident in real time and informed her next of kin within 20 minutes. Result: The resident recovered fully within 30 minutes, and my swift response was noted in the subsequent incident review, with my documentation used as a best-practice example for the team.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to balance completing care tasks with respecting a service user's wishes and autonomy.

Situation: A 82-year-old gentleman I supported regularly refused his morning personal care routine, which was a required element of his care plan. Task: I needed to ensure his hygiene needs were met without overriding his right to make decisions about his own body. Action: I took time to have a calm conversation to understand his concerns — he felt rushed. I restructured his morning routine to allow an extra 20 minutes and offered him choices about the order of tasks. I also flagged the pattern to the care coordinator, who updated his care plan accordingly. Result: His cooperation improved significantly over the following two weeks, and his keyworker noted a visible improvement in his mood and engagement during morning visits.
