1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult supplier relationship.

Our key component supplier was consistently delivering 3 weeks late, affecting our production schedule for 8 product lines. I arranged an urgent site visit to understand their capacity constraints and discovered they were struggling with raw material shortages. I negotiated a 6-month contract amendment allowing them to secure materials in advance, whilst implementing weekly progress reviews and penalty clauses for continued delays. This collaborative approach restored delivery performance to 96% OTIF within 2 months and strengthened our partnership, ultimately saving £45k in expediting costs.
2Question

Describe a situation where you successfully reduced procurement costs while maintaining quality.

Faced with a 15% budget reduction target, I conducted a comprehensive spend analysis across our 40 suppliers and identified consolidation opportunities. I negotiated with 3 competing suppliers to create a preferred supplier agreement, leveraging increased volume for 18% cost savings on machined components. To maintain quality, I implemented enhanced incoming inspection protocols and quarterly supplier audits. The initiative delivered £120k annual savings whilst actually improving defect rates from 2.1% to 0.8% through better supplier partnership and quality focus.
