STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to negotiate with a difficult supplier

Situation: Our main titanium supplier increased prices by 22% mid-contract, threatening our aerospace project margins. Task: I needed to renegotiate terms whilst maintaining quality standards and delivery schedules. Action: I researched alternative suppliers, prepared a detailed cost analysis showing the impact on our 8 active projects, and arranged a face-to-face meeting with their commercial director. I presented our long-term partnership value and offered extended contract terms in exchange for price stability. Result: We agreed on a 12% increase instead of 22%, saving £180k annually whilst securing 3-year price protection.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage competing project priorities

Situation: Three urgent aerospace projects needed the same specialist machining supplier simultaneously, but they only had capacity for two. Task: I had to prioritise projects whilst minimising delays and maintaining client relationships. Action: I analysed each project's critical path, identified which had the most flexibility, and negotiated with two alternative suppliers for the third project. I also arranged for overtime capacity at our primary supplier for the most time-critical components. Result: All three projects delivered on schedule, with the alternative supplier becoming a valuable backup resource for future projects, increasing our supplier base by 15%.
