Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Open your Personal Statement with your PQE level and Private Client specialism explicitly — the advert requires a minimum of 2 years PQE, so state this clearly at the top.

2

📊 Quantify your caseload: e.g. 'Managed 60+ active Private Client files simultaneously, covering Wills, LPAs and Estate Administration' to demonstrate capacity and breadth.

3

🎯 Highlight specific IHT and Trust experience prominently, as Estate Planning (IHT, Care Home Fee Planning, Trusts) is listed as a core responsibility — use these exact terms in your CV.

4

🤝 Include a concrete example of business development activity (e.g. referral network built, seminar delivered, new client introductions) as the advert specifically mentions supporting BD initiatives.

5

🏛️ If you have any Court of Protection experience, list it as a dedicated bullet — even though described as 'occasional', it differentiates candidates and signals full-spectrum Private Client capability.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a particularly complex or high-value estate administration — what challenges did you face and how did you resolve them?

Situation: I was instructed on an estate valued at £1.4M involving a property portfolio, overseas assets in Spain, and a disputed Will from a disgruntled beneficiary. Task: I needed to obtain a grant of probate, resolve the dispute and repatriate the overseas assets within the executor's preferred 12-month timeline. Action: I coordinated with a Spanish notary, instructed a mediator to resolve the beneficiary dispute within 6 weeks, and submitted a detailed IHT400 with supporting valuations to HMRC. Result: The estate was fully administered in 11 months, the dispute settled without litigation, and the executors received a net estate distribution of £1.1M — with written thanks submitted to the firm's senior partner.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage competing deadlines across a large caseload. How did you prioritise?

Situation: During a period of staff absence, I inherited an additional 18 active files on top of my existing caseload of 55 matters, with three estate administrations approaching HMRC deadlines simultaneously. Task: I needed to ensure no deadline was missed and client communication remained consistent. Action: I triaged all files by urgency, flagged the three HMRC-critical matters to my supervisor, and created a daily priority tracker. I delegated routine correspondence on lower-urgency files to our paralegal and blocked two focused work sessions each day for the deadline-critical matters. Result: All three IHT submissions were filed on time, no client complaints were raised during the four-week period, and I cleared the backlog within five weeks.
