STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a particularly challenging probate case

I handled a complex probate case involving a £1.8M estate with disputed beneficiaries across three jurisdictions. The situation required coordinating with overseas lawyers whilst managing family tensions during an already difficult time. I organised weekly conference calls with all parties, prepared detailed timeline documentation, and maintained transparent communication throughout the 18-month process. My systematic approach and regular updates helped resolve all disputes amicably, resulting in successful estate distribution and the family recommending our services to three other relatives requiring legal assistance.
2Question

Describe how you've contributed to business development in your previous role

I recognised that many clients needed ongoing trust management services after initial will drafting. I developed a quarterly newsletter highlighting trust administration benefits and tax planning opportunities, which I sent to 150 existing clients. This initiative generated 12 new trust management instructions worth £85,000 in annual recurring fees. I also established relationships with three local financial advisors through networking events, resulting in 8 referrals in the first year. These efforts contributed to a 25% increase in our private client department's revenue over 24 months.
