Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's Picker/Driver role in St. Austell stands out to me as a strong match for my background in van-based delivery and warehouse order picking. I hold a full UK driving licence and have hands-on experience using handheld terminals for accurate order picking and dispatch, two skills your advert identifies as central to the role.

My background in delivery operations has equipped me with the ability to manage time-sensitive routes, carry out quality and shelf life checks on outgoing stock, and provide a professional, courteous service to customers at their premises. I have handled delivery queries and complaints calmly, escalating complex issues to supervisors where appropriate, and consistently met daily dispatch targets.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service under pressure.

Situation: During a busy pre-Christmas period at my previous delivery job, our depot was short-staffed and I was assigned 32 drops in a single shift — 8 more than usual. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries on time while maintaining a friendly, professional manner with every customer. Action: I reorganised my route to cluster nearby stops, communicated realistic arrival windows to 4 customers whose deliveries would be later than expected, and kept each doorstep interaction brief but warm. Result: All 32 deliveries were completed within the shift window, I received 3 positive customer comments passed back to the depot manager, and no complaints were logged that day.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a discrepancy in stock or an order — how did you handle it?

Situation: While picking a wholesale grocery order using a handheld scanner, I noticed the system showed 24 units of a chilled product in stock but only 17 were physically present on the shelf. Task: I needed to resolve the discrepancy before the order was dispatched to avoid a customer shortage. Action: I immediately flagged the shortfall to the shift supervisor, who confirmed a stock adjustment was needed. I substituted 7 units with an approved alternative product and updated the delivery note accordingly. Result: The customer received a complete order, the stock record was corrected in the system, and the supervisor noted the catch prevented a potential customer complaint and a failed delivery credit claim.
