Letter preview — tailored to Reed

Dear Hiring Manager,

Having qualified as a solicitor with a focus on Private Client work, I was immediately drawn to this NQ+ opportunity at your Bedford firm. The breadth of the role — spanning wills and probate, trust drafting, estate administration, Court of Protection, and tax planning — aligns precisely with the experience I have built through my training contract and subsequent caseload management.

My background in Private Client law has equipped me to handle complex, sensitive matters with care and technical rigour. I have advised clients on Inheritance Tax mitigation strategies, administered estates with multi-jurisdictional assets, and prepared Lasting Powers of Attorney for clients with varying capacity needs. I am currently progressing towards my STEP qualification, which I believe will further strengthen my advisory capability in this area.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a particularly sensitive or complex client matter in Private Client — how did you handle it?

Situation: A recently bereaved widow came to me needing urgent probate assistance on her late husband's estate, which included a discretionary trust and an outstanding HMRC Inheritance Tax query worth £85,000. Task: I needed to manage her expectations sensitively while resolving the tax dispute and progressing the estate efficiently. Action: I arranged a home visit to take full instructions, liaised directly with HMRC to negotiate a payment instalment plan, and kept the client updated with weekly written summaries in plain English. Result: The IHT matter was resolved within 10 weeks, the estate was distributed in full within 7 months, and the client subsequently instructed the firm on her own will and trust planning.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to manage competing deadlines across multiple Private Client files. How did you prioritise?

Situation: During a particularly busy quarter, I was simultaneously handling 35 active files, including 4 taxable estates with imminent IHT400 deadlines and 3 Court of Protection applications awaiting urgent deputyship orders. Task: I needed to ensure no deadlines were missed without compromising the quality of advice to any client. Action: I created a colour-coded deadline tracker updated daily, delegated routine correspondence on lower-priority files to a paralegal, and blocked focused drafting time each morning for the most time-critical matters. Result: All 4 IHT400 submissions were filed on time, avoiding late-filing penalties totalling approximately £1,200, and all 3 deputyship orders were granted within the target 16-week window.
