STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a challenging child make progress

Situation: I worked with an 8-year-old boy with severe ADHD who was disrupting lessons and struggling academically. Task: I needed to help him focus and engage with learning while minimising classroom disruption. Action: I introduced a visual timetable and movement breaks every 15 minutes, worked with the teacher to create shorter task segments, and used positive reinforcement charts. I also established clear boundaries and consistent routines. Result: Within 6 weeks, his on-task behaviour improved from 20% to 75%, his reading level increased by 2 stages, and classroom disruptions reduced by 90%. The teacher reported significant improvement in his confidence and peer relationships.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals

Situation: A Year 3 pupil with Down syndrome was struggling with communication and social integration despite having a speech therapist and occupational therapist involved. Task: I needed to coordinate support strategies across all professionals to ensure consistency. Action: I initiated weekly planning meetings with the class teacher, SENCO, speech therapist and OT. We developed a unified communication plan using Makaton signs, created sensory break schedules, and established consistent reward systems. I documented daily progress and shared observations with the team. Result: The pupil's communication attempts increased by 60% in 4 weeks, social interactions with peers improved dramatically, and all professionals reported better coordination. The collaborative approach became the school's model for complex SEN cases.
